Bear skaters looking for scoring touch

After waiting a long time because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the start of the 2020 Michigan High School Athletic Association hockey season has been less than thrilling for the Roosevelt Bears.

Coach Mike Quint’s squad opened the campaign with five straight losses in which it was outscored 21-2.

The lack of offensive punch showed up in a season-opening 5-1 loss to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett. In that game, Jason Cuppari’s power-play goal was the only scoring of the night for the host Bears. Ray Isham and Jason Johnson assisted.

The offensive drought continued in a 1-0 loss to Birmingham Detroit Country Day, a 6-0 loss to Saalem, a 5-1 loss to Novi and a 5-0 loss to Trenton.

The early portion of this year’s schedule is packed with heavy-hitters as University Liggett, Novi, Country Day and, of course, Trenton all have state championships on their recent resumes.

The slates eases some during the second half and the Bears should get a chance to catch their breath.
